Sophist | philosophy The School of Athens (Italian: Scuola di Atene) is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was painted between 1509 and 1511 as a part of Raphael's commission to decorate the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The Stanza della Segnatura The School of Athens represents all the greatest mathematicians, philosophers and scientists from classical antiquity gathered together sharing their ideas and learning from each other. These figures all lived at different times, but here they are gathered together under one roof. The School of Athens is one of four wall frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura, The room was set to be Julius’ library, and therefore Raphael’s overall concept balances the contents of what would have been in the pope’s study.

The fresco known as The School of Athens was painted by Raphael between 1510 and 1511. In it, Aristotle and Plato hold court with other ancient philosophers in an idealized setting. By the start of the 1500s, Raphael’s fame — particularly for his renditions of the Virgin Mary — had spread to Rome.
